6–8 weeks before

Confirm passport is valid 6+ months past your return date
Book flights that land the day before embarkation, not the day of
Decide on drink package, Wi-Fi, and specialty dining — run the numbers in the calculator first
Buy travel insurance if your trip cost exceeds what you could absorb as a loss
Set up online check-in as soon as it opens on the cruise line's site

2 weeks before

Complete online check-in and print or save boarding documents
Set a daily onboard spending budget for extras (photos, casino, spa, shopping)
Notify your bank and credit card companies of travel dates and destinations
Download the cruise line's app for onboard messaging and daily schedules
Make copies of passports and ID — one physical, one saved digitally

Packing list

Passport, boarding documents, driver's license
Lanyard or holder for your cruise card / room key
Reusable water bottle (many lines allow empty ones through security)
Motion sickness remedy, even if you don't normally get seasick
Portable power strip (non-surge-protected — check your line's exact policy)
Light jacket or layer for dining rooms and evenings at sea
Swimsuit, cover-up, and sandals packed in your carry-on, not checked luggage
Small day bag for port excursions
Cash in small bills for tipping outside the auto-gratuity (porters, bartenders on excursions)

Embarkation day

Arrive at the terminal within your assigned check-in window, not before
Carry on any medications, valuables, and a swimsuit — checked luggage can take hours to arrive
Eat lunch onboard before your cabin is ready; buffets typically open right at boarding
Locate your muster station and complete the safety drill
Set up your onboard account (credit card or cash) at guest services if not done online

Check the daily specials — spa, photo packages, and shopping deals are often steeply discounted on port days
Skip ship-run excursions for popular ports; independent tours are frequently cheaper for the same activity
Ask about the drink-of-the-day and happy hour windows even without a package
Review your onboard account statement mid-cruise, not just at checkout, to catch billing errors early
